AFL – A liga rival que mudou a história do Futebol Americano!

Estamos em 1959. A NFL reina soberana nos Estados Unidos sobre o futebol americano profissional. Até então ligas rivais profissionais não obtiveram o mesmo sucesso, caindo na extinção e no esquecimento. Exemplos disso são os Cleveland Rams (atuais Saint Louis Rams), nascidos em 1936 numa antiga AFL, Cleveland Browns e San Francisco 49ers, remanescentes da AAFC (All-Americans Football Conference), e o Baltimore Colts, avô do atual Indianapolis Colts, também vindo da AAFC. Mas todas estas ligas profissionais sucumbiram à força da NFL, nascida em 1920. Apenas pra constar, tivemos o Chicago Cardinals (que também já foi Saint Louis, Phoenix, e agora é Arizona Cardinals), que entrou na NFL em 1922, vindo da antiga e extinta Ohio League. Tudo isso é uma introdução ao nosso assunto.

Em 1958, New York Giants e Baltimore Colts fazem a decisão da NFL, no Yankee Stadium, num evento televisionado para todos os Estados Unidos, com vitória dos Colts sobre os nossos Giants, por 23x 17, no jogo apelidado de “the greatest game ever played” (o maior jogo de todos os tempos).

Parecia que a NFL jamais sairia do Olimpo. Parecia… 1959, no ano seguinte, Lamar Hunt, empresário do ramo petrolífero, solicitou à NFL uma “expansão”, desejando criar um time em Dallas, 2 anos antes do nascimento dos Cowboys. Mas o seu pedido foi recusado. Com grandes idéias na cabeça, que revolucionariam o esporte, contatou outros empresários dos mais variados ramos e, em agosto de 1959, criou a American Footbal League. Era o começo de tudo.

1960 – a primeira temporada: Juntam-se à AFL 8 franquias inicias:

EASTERN DIVISION

Boston Patriots – Buffalo Bills – Houston Oilers – New York Titans (atual New York Jets)

WESTERN DIVISION

Denver Broncos - Oakland Raiders - Los Angeles Chargers (atual San Diego Chargers) – Dallas Texans (atual Kansas City Chiefs) – Time de Lamar Hunt.

Em 1966 e 1968 acontecem os primeiros “expansion teams” da Liga:

Miami Dolphins na EASTERN DIVISION em 1966, e Cincinnati Bengals na WESTERN DIVISION em 1968.

1960 - Houston Oilers sagra-se Campeão da AFL, batendo o L.A.Chargers na final em casa por 24 x 16.

1961 – Houston Oilers sagra-se Bicampeão, batendo o San Diego Chargers na final em casa por 10 x 3.

1962 – Dallas Texans (K.C.Chiefs de Lamar Hunt) sagra-se Campeão, batendo o Houston Oilers na final em casa por 20 x 17.

1963 – San Diego Chargers sagra-se Campeão da AFL, batendo o Boston Patriots na final em casa por 51 x 10.

1964 – Buffalo Bills vence na final da AFL o San Diego Chargers por 20 x 7.

1965 – Buffalo Bills vence na final novamente o San Diego Chargers por 23 x 0.

Em 1966 o sucesso da AFL era tamanho no meio esportivo americano que Lamar Hunt, então presidente da Liga, desafia o Campeão da rival NFL prum duelo de Super Campeões: nasce o SUPER BOWL!

Mas, por que o sucesso da AFL era tão grande, frente à rival NFL?

Primeiro filme de slow-motion em jogo;

Os kickers e punters da AFL desenvolvem um estilo diferente de chute, vindo do SOCCER (o nosso futebol);

Re-introdução do 14º jogo regular na Temporada;

As equipes da AFL contam com uniformes e logos imaginativos e coloridos, despertando a atenção;

Com a AFL nasceu o Fantasy Football;

E o mais importante de tudo: os times da AFL eram extremamente OFENSIVOS, com ataques poderosos, diferente dos jogos Defensivos da NFL

(a AFL desenvolveu muito bem os jogos aéreos, causando grande impacto).

O choque da AFL e da NFL foi inevitável!

Em 1966 o Kansas City Chiefs (de Lamar Hunt) bate o Buffalo Bills na final da AFL por 31 x 7.

Mas, suprema surpresa: perde o 1º Superbowl pro campeão da NFL, o Green Bay Packers, por 35 a 10!

Em 1967 o Oakland Raiders (que já era do Al Davis, falecido recentemente) bate o Houston Oilers por 40 x 7 na final da AFL.

Nova surpresa: o Green Bay Packers, Campeão da NFL, sagra-se Bicampeão do Super Bowl, vencendo o Oakland Raiders por 33 x 14.

Em 1968 a AFL mudou a história do Grande Jogo! O New York Jets (nascido N.Y.Titans, pra provocar os GIANTS!), do quarterback falastrão Joe Namath, vence a final da AFL sobre o Oakland Raiders por 27 a 23.

Na semana do Super Bowl, provoca o time inteiro do Campeão da NFL, Baltimore Colts, mas cumpre a promessa: seu time vence o Super Bowl por 16 x 7.

Essa provocação de “Broadway” Joe Namath fez com que o Super Bowl III fosse inesquecível, marcando ainda mais esse jogo como o grande evento esportivo dos Estados Unidos, superando as “World Series” do Beisebol!

Em 1969, seria o grande ano de Lamar Hunt: o K.C.Chiefs vence a final da AFL contra o Oakland Raiders por 17 x 7. E vence o Super Bowl IV contra o famoso Minnesota Vikings, por 23 x7.

Em 1970, o Congresso Americano aprova a fusão das duas Ligas, AFL e NFL, numa comissão anticartel esportivo, e nasce a nova e toda-poderosa NFL atual.

A AFL se torna American CONFERENCE, e a antiga NFL se torna National CONFERENCE.

O Super Bowl continua sendo feito entre os Campeões das 2 Conferências (antes Ligas rivais); mas o sonho de LAMAR HUNT, fundador da AFL, se fez vitorioso: inovou o esporte, engrandeceu ainda mais a NFL, apesar de que as idéias da atual NFL são da antiga AFL.

Pode-se dizer que o pequeno Davi AFL venceu o gigante Golias NFL…

Um pequeno acréscimo: Hoje a AFL Eastern é a AFC East Division, e a AFL Western é a AFC West Division…
